Dressing for a Spring Family Photography Session

What to wear for a Spring Family Photography Session

The birds are chirping, and the buds are blooming. That means it’s time for your spring family session. Here are a few wardrobe tips on what to wear, so you can ensure the whole family looks amazing.

First, Play up the fact that it’s spring. Channel the colors of spring. Seriously – look out the window for inspiration for your family’s color palette. Keep in mind the word “complement” rather than “match.” pick 2-3  colors and spread them throughout the family. Greens, pinks, yellows, beige, khaki, and blues all work exceptionally well.  For moms I recommend that you pick fabrics that move and flow with you. Flowy maxi dresses and skirts can show a lot of movement and look great in walking photos and other photos with movement.

Don’t be afraid to mix a few subtle patterns or textures (such as linen). A good rule of thumb is select 2 patterns for every 1 solid  (plaid and floral) to Solid pink and choose 1 texture for every 1 solid.   For example a family of 5 would be: 2 solids ; 2 patterns; 1 texture.

Secondly, Layer up! Spring can be both warm and cold at once, so come prepared for all sorts of weather conditions by adding in clothing such as light jackets, cardigans, vest, wraps, colored tights, knee socks, hats, etc. Wearing layers is not only great for functionality it’s also a versatile way to add  pops of color and help when coordinating everyone.

Lastly, try to work with your kids early on with wardrobe. Being comfortable is everything and should be top priority for everyone, but especially with kids. Since walking and playing to some extent is involved stick with soft cotton or other natural fabrics.

Remember, at the end of the day your wardrobe should be comfortable and reflect who you are. The goal is for you and your family look and feel like yourself, and to capture this time of your life in all its glory.
